Pou4f1 is a transcription factor that exhibits high RNA levels in testis and moderate or lower levels across the other human tissues, including brain. In the mouse, it is distributed within neuronal processes, while neuronal cell body staining is also noticed in the olfactory bulb external plexiform layer and in medullar nuclei. Strong axonal immunostaining of white matter tracts are noticed in the caudate putamen, corpus callosum, stria terminalis and in the brainstem, while weak to moderate intensity immunostaining of fine axonal networks is noticed throughout parts of the gray matter. This pattern is more pronounced in the entire olfactory bulb, some neocortical regions, hippocampus, amygdala nuclei, entorhinal cortex, hypothalamus, cerebellum and the area postrema.
